About The Artist

Linked by a playful sense of humor, Brooklyn-based artist Nina Katchadourian’s projects come in a wide variety of media; from video and photography to sculpture and sound art.

Her comic ingenuity is exemplified in her most recent series of photographs titled ‘Seat Assignment,’ which were entirely conceived in different airplane bathrooms and shot with a phone camera. Using paper toilet seat covers and articles of clothing, Katchadourian fashions elaborate costumes in order to recreate 15th century portraits by Flemish masters, resulting in an arresting blend of DIY and connoisseur aesthetics.

Katchadourian’s video “Accent Elimination” was included in the 2015 Venice Biennale “All the World’s Futures”, which was curated by Okwui Enwezor. In 2017 her work will be the focus of a travelling solo museum exhibition which will originate at the Blanton Museum of Art in Austin, TX.

She has also exhibited at esteemed institutions such as MoMA PS1, the Serpentine Gallery, the Saatchi Gallery, and the Palais de Tokyo. Previously, The Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego presented a solo exhibition of Katchadourian’s video work in 2008, and the Tang Museum at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs held a 10 year survey of Katchadourian’s oeuvre in 2006, while also publishing a monograph for the exhibition titled “All Forms of Attraction.”

Nina Katchadourian is an Associate Professor at the NYU Gallatin School of Individualized Study and is represented by Catharine Clark Gallery in San Francisco.

The works for this exhibition range from works that address serious concerns with humorous affect to others whose intent is more purely comedic. Together, they provide an intriguing snapshot of the manner in which comic strategies manifest themselves in contemporary art.
