ABOUT THE ARTIST

Jordan Casteel has rooted her painting practice in community engagement. Based in Harlem, New York, Casteel’s nearly life-size portraits and cropped compositions chronicle personal observations of the human experience.

The artist earned her MFA in painting and printmaking from Yale School of Art in 2014, and was an artist in residence at the Studio Museum in Harlem from 2015-2016. Recent solo exhibitions include, Jordan Casteel: Returning the Gaze, Denver Art Museum, Denver, CO, 2019, traveling to Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts, Stanford, CA, 2019-2020. Casteel’s work has been shown at institutions such as Baltimore Museum of Art, Baltimore, MD; Addison Gallery of American Art, Andover, MA; Aïshti Foundation, Beirut, Lebanon; MoCA, Los Angeles, CA and Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Bentonville, AR.
