At first glance the print resembles a black monochrome; upon further viewing a photographic image emerges. Hinant, whose practice often examines the representation of young women in mass media, appropriated an image of the actress Megan Fox exiting a black car at night. The found photograph is typical of a millennial genre of celebrity photography termed ‘upskirt’ where starlets or reality tv personalities ‘mistakenly’ flash their undergarments or their genitals. Are these really unintended? Now a big business, there are websites and fan forums devoted to such images. Hinant renders the image upside down, a play on the term ‘upskirt’. Typical of her practice, this edition combines conceptual strategies, popular culture and gender politics.
