About Artwork

Karen Kilimnik is known as much for her paintings influenced by traditions of Romantic painting, portraiture and landscape, as she is for her late 80’s/early 90’s Scatter Art installations, such as “The Hellfire Club The Avengers”. Her work constantly merges from popular culture to Old Master paintings, via television shows, movies, books, magazines, animal portraits and fairytales, in which the lives of animals are equal to that of human beings. “guarding the flowers and lunch” is a tondo painting of two different types of finches, catching its characters in the midst of discussing concerns shared across species. “Throughout, a reworking of cultural codes and mores reveals an artistic realm where a mystical past is consciously evoked in the present, veiled in an air of earnest mystery and delight.”
