[more]Fast and not so furious is a good way to describe Maarten Baas’ rise in the worlds of furniture, interior, and industrial design.
As a student at the Design Academy Eindhoven (then under the reign of Li Edelkoort), Baas’ work received almost immediate acclaim. Pieces like his “Knuckle” candleholder and “Hey, Chair, Be a Bookshelf” helped solidify Baas’ reputation as an artistic thinker. His subsequent pieces “Smoke” and “Clay Furniture” propelled Baas into “museumship”…with these collections, museums and collectors around the world started to request and collect Maarten Baas pieces. Baas has (had) successful collaborations with IKEA, Moooi, Bas den Herder, Ruinart, and Ian Schrager and his numbered and signed works have been seen at museums including: the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the Groninger and Stedelijk museums (both in the Netherlands), the Design Museum in London, and the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
The soft-spoken Dutch designer is known for pieces that become instant classics and instant must-haves, pieces that push the boundaries of do and don’t…pieces that spark new ways of thinking.
PS: Maarten Baas is inspired by Jurgen Bey and Bertjan Pot.
