    Sculpture Made From 9/11 Ruins To Be Installed In London Park

    Steel girders recovered from the World Trade Center wreckage will be used in a sculpture to be erected in a London park next year to mark the 10th anniversary of 9/11.


    A spokeswoman for the 9/11 London Project Foundation told Monday's Evening Standard that the sculpture will coincide with the launch of a major educational program to teach schoolchildren about the terrorist attack.


    “We have been set up to ensure that the legacy of 9/11 is to build hope from tragedy. We will cover the events of 9/11 and its background, its consequences and its legacy,” Sarah Matthews said.


    The steel columns were donated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to the foundation, which commissioned New York artist Miya Ando to create a permanent honor in London to the 2,977 victims of the terror attacks.


    The 8.5-meter illuminated upright steel columns will be surrounded by a pool of water on Potters Fields Park, beside London’s City Hall and will be erected in Sept. 2011, a decade after the Twin Towers collapsed.


    Ando said that being commissioned for the project was “an incredible honor,” adding that the sculpture will "serve as a visual symbol of peace and tolerance."


    However the local residents’ association and the Potters Fields Park Management Trust do not support the sculpture.


    The Park’s Trust chairman, Councilor Nick Stanton, recently wrote to the 9/11 London Project Foundation to say that "the board felt that the scope and size of the installation was inappropriate given the size of the park" and that "only a smaller and radically redesigned installation" was likely to be acceptable.
