Razorfish started out in 1995 with just two employees: the technically creative Craig Kanarick and the fiscally creative Jeffrey Dachis. The venture was an instant success -- from that point, the company grew into one of the many small, industrious, "bleeding edge" web shops. Of course, intensive background work helped the company to understand which direction the winds of success were blowing. In the early days, Razorfish's offerings were both creative and technical. However, the company found its design goals difficult to achieve with the software tools available. In what turned out to be the first wave in its multimedia ocean, it devised its own web development tools, which it then marketed -- figuring that other companies were experiencing the same problems. Again, Razorfish's intuition proved correct. The company now professes to have declined more work than it has actually accepted. Given the length of the corporate food chain, no one was surprised when Razorfish started eating smaller fish such as Spray and I-Cube. It is now one of a full range of advertising, marketing, and production companies that pulls in annual incomes into the billions.
