Impassioned by the Andelusian cante jondo, or 'deep song,' and Spanish surrealists -- especially Federico Garcia Lorca's invocation of the duende, or world of metaphysical knowledge -- Deep Image poets took their readers on a highly stylized excursion into the hidden realms of wisdom. Though short-lived and scattered theoretically, the movement's bold, flamenco-like turns of phrase and marriage of the quotidian with the archetypal inspired readers to look within objects and moments to discover their kernels of mysterious essence. Its ideal -- suggested by the Duende's ghostly underworld of magic -- is the apprehension of that elusive inner sanctum of existential mystery fluttering on the surface of nature.
A mystical school, Deep Imagists ultimately tried to capture that singular moment of enlightenment, developing associative techniques that they hoped would circumvent discourse and tap the unconscious realm. Robert Bly described the style as 'leaping poetry' which created 'a long floating leap around which the work of art in ancient times used to gather itself like steel shavings around a magnet.' Poets Mark Strand, Diane Wakoski, and Robert Kelly are also connected to the movement, whose influence colored some of their work but did not define any of their careers as a whole.
